Centre for Social Action (CSA), a student voluntary body of Christ (Deemed to be University) organized the second edition of Social Action Summit (SAS). This event brought in various speakers from across the country focusing on the theme of Rebuilding India through Social Action, by sensitizing the youth and empowering the spirits in them to work towards social actions.
The chief guest of the day, Mr. Anand Malligavad, is a notable activist and environmentalist in Karnataka. He first lit the lamp to inaugurate the event and then proceeded to address the gathering. His witty speech which aimed at emphasizing the phrase, “A thought for an action” struck a cord with the audience and made them think about how they can contribute to the society.
The speakers or the show-stealers of the day had their diverse bunch of stories that they shared with the audience. Anshu Gupta – The clothing man of India, and the recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award, gave an intriguing and thought-provoking speech putting forward statements like “why should people change the world? Why not improve it?”. His contributions and achievements were also highlighted in his talk.
Maneesha Ramakrishnan, who tragically lost her voice in the Carlton Towers fire, won the hearts of the gathering with her inspiring story. From being afraid about the world’s perception of her to just listening to a little more of a child’s laughter, she fulfilled her dream of being a proud mother. Undoubtedly, she stunned the crowd loading them with immense positivity.
Shifa Anjum, a young speaker who is also one of the greatest success stories of Activity Centre, the child education wing of CSA contributed her part on this day talking about instances where religion and caste system still play a role in our society and how she wants to change it.
Harish Iyer, an Equal Rights activist, left the entire auditorium teary-eyed with his speech. From experiencing sexual harassment at a very young age, to being confused and bullied about his sexuality, he narrated his hard journey of wanting to scream but losing his voice. Representing the LGBTQA+ community, he stated, “My sexuality is the essence of my being and not the consequence of my life”. He also rightly said that, “The world has many tellers but not enough listeners”. He gave many people the courage to open up about their issues right there.
Poonam Bagai, a cancer crusader and the founder of CanKids…KidsCan, told the audience how she started her journey by questioning herself on what she gave back to society by surviving. She highlighted the fact that there is service beyond self by calling the audience to action with mottos like “Look within and beyond by finding the hero in you” and “Pick a cause and make it yours”.
Towards the end, when the audience was filled with emotions and motivation came the Digital Gandhi, Onkar K Khullar who brought in lightning bolts of energy to the auditorium, by engaging the audience in many activities. He primarily spoke about how the emotions of love and fear affect a person and how one should not regret anything. Through games, he made a point on how the world will be left with nothing if every individual starts to take everything for themselves.
This impeccably organized event was loved by the gathering which included Christites from different campuses, students from other schools and colleges and also activists from NGOs. It has definitely become one of the most anticipated events for the years to come.
