The Merchant of Venice

CHRIST (Deemed to be University) began its foray into Shakespearean theatre in 2012 with The Merchant of Venice. In swift response to a suggestion by Dr. Madhava Menon founder of the National Law School in Bangalore, that the famous courtroom scene between Portia and Shylock be enacted by the School of Law, the entire play was produced in a matter of a few months in the main auditorium of CHRIST (Deemed to be University) and brought forth sterling performances from the students of the School of Law. In turn, the performance drew much applause from the audience on both the days and rave reviews from Dr. Madhava Menon himself. The well-known and beloved story of the rich merchant Antonio who pledged his life almost, to give his friend Bassanio enough money to seek the favour of a beautiful woman called Portia, and the nefarious workings of the man who gave it - the jew Shylock- twists itself into a captivating tale of love, loyalty and greed. The Merchant of Venice was well received all round.
