On eighth September 2016, graphic narrator Samhita Arni who is well known for her artistic work "The Mahabharata. A Child's View" and "Sita's Ramayana" had gone by CHRIST (Deemed to be University) Banerghatta Campus to talk about the pros and cons of Graphic novel writing. The Workshop started from 1:30 sharp toward the afternoon in the Seminar Hall.
In the workshop, Samhita Arni talked about how images play a very important role in the graphic novels. She also discussed about the importance of page design layout of a graphic novel. She also exclaimed that how we can imagine a graphic novel writing being very similar to writing screenplays. She also said that she treats the text of a graphic narrative like an audio track which helps in shaping up a graphic narrative and goes side by side with the images of a graphic narrative. She did also talk about her experience of working for comic magazines. She also mentioned about how it is really not important to exactly write whatever a picture depicts in a graphic novel or a comic book. She did also talk about the importance of distinct caption writing in graphic novels. She did also point to the students how important it is to figure out how we want to make the eyes of our viewers to move. She did also mention about the distinct information or speech a graphic narrator should try to put in the thought bubbles or callouts. She emphasized on the basic and simple components of writing stories or text of a novel. She did also point out about the difficulties faced by graphic narrative writers or comic book authors as they have to exactly describe whatever a picture or an image of a narrative portrays. But then she did also say how this practice of exactly writing and describing the image portrayed is not necessary as the picture or the image can clearly depict what it is all about if the viewer looks at the image. It is more important to make the text of the image worth reading, which should not only be interesting but also unique. “If the action of the image is prominent then what can the text or the audio tracks do?”—this was the question asked by her to the students attending her workshop to which Sunaina Ullal of 1Engh had said that it can enhance the quality of the writing, as she described how an action can take place and can also be described through text in a graphic narrative. She did also discuss about the importance of engaging with different perspectives. The students had to take part in two activities in the workshop, where Samhita Arni had showcased some images on the projector with the help of which the students had to form fictional stories. That was a fun activity as all the students did enthusiastically share their respective plots and storylines.
Lastly, she did also talk about her experience of writing “Sita’s Ramayana” and her interests in Hindu mythologies and its characters. She also did talk individually to the 1st year English honors students about their CIA which was about writing illustrative graphic novels.
At the end of the workshop she was felicitated by Ms. Renu E. Abrahams the faculty co-ordinator of Wordsmiths
