OBJECTIVE:
To encourage students to gain knowledge on Agile and its strategies.
POSSIBLE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. To apply the agile principles in designing and problem solving.
2. To instil the basic ideas in LEAN principles.
SUMMARY:
The workshop started with discussing the existing software development methodologies such waterfall model, spiral model etc. Each model’s advantages and disadvantages were pointed out and gradually the scenarios discussing the needs of agile were brought into light. Agile is defined as incremental, user driven and low process approach towards software development. Agile is based on LEAN principles which include mura, muri, muda and kaizen. This makes up the agile manifesto which has four basic points. These points being
• Individuals and interactions over Process and tools
• Working software over documentation
• Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
• Responding to change over following a plan
Implementing agile has several methodologies under its umbrella such as scrum, extreme programming, crystal, DSDM and many more. The workshop’s focus was on scrum since it is one of the most popular ways to utilize agile methodologies. Scrum is an empirical process having self-managing teams with having a proper estimate of time and budget. It is achieved through sprints. A sprint is a time based event in which some part of the product is developed. Sprint is decided by sprint planning which includes capacity planning, user story, sprint goal and sprint burn down chart. Each task is achieved by taking tasks from product backlog. A sprint meeting is called onto this task and capacity planning is done. After planning each team takes up a user story and decides its goal. By the end of sprint a burn down chart is created which gives us a clear overview of the tasks accomplished. The workshop demonstrated all of the above mentioned points through practical activities which gave us the required practical exposure. The workshop proved to be very useful and helped us increase knowledge in Agile methodologies.
