Executive Summary
In Belgaum, Karnataka a vast amount of waste foundry sand is generated from the Belgaum foundry cluster units and its disposal as a solid waste is difficult due to environmental regulations. Management of Belgaum Foundry Cluster requested for a collaboration for finding suitable avenues for value addition of the waste.
Accordingly a few projects were taken up in Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department. Experimental trials indicated that the material is suitable for value addition replacing common sandy soil used in red brick manufacture and meets the regulatory requirement of minimization of common sand used in civil constructions. Based on the successful laboratory scale trials commercial trials are being planned presently in red brick manufacturing cluster at Malur, Karnataka. Techno-economic considerations indicate a three-fold increase in profit if the red bricks are manufactured from waste foundry sand with replacement of sandy clay used in common red brick manufacture.
