Executive Summary

India being a developing country has been rapidly growing since its independence in 1947. In order to achieve this advancement several large dams were built throughout the country making India the third largest dam building country of the world. Though economic progress of the nation has been given prominence, there have been considerable setbacks on the socio-cultural front in the lives of communities. The World Bank has studied these ‘risks’ that emerge out of the phenomenon.

This study is based on the eight risks identified by Michael M Cernea, who was the Social Scientist with the World Bank as well as three others that are added by Asian scholars. A new concept of dual residences is found where in the entire community as a whole is unwilling to let go of their lands and return to live in their original habitat once the environmental conditions change. The presence of all the eleven risks is found in the affected communities that has drawn the path for further research in the area of risk mitigation.
