The Department of Mathematics along with the Sustainable Development Cell of CHRIST (Deemed to be University) organized the Campus Food Waste Awareness Campaign on 9 October 2023 to mark the International Day of Food Loss and Waste Awareness. The initiative aimed to promote responsible consumption practices and create awareness about the environmental and ethical implications of food wastage within the university community. The campaign attracted around 300 participants, including students, faculty, and staff, and successfully fostered a sense of shared responsibility toward sustainability.
The event combined learning and engagement through a series of creative awareness games such as Dare Wheel, Memory Game, and Whisper Challenge, which made participants reflect on everyday food habits while enjoying a fun and interactive experience. Informative posters and an awareness video effectively highlighted the urgency of reducing food waste and encouraged conversations around sustainable living. A team of 18 student organizers from undergraduate and postgraduate programs also conducted interviews with canteen owners, food vendors, and staff to collect first-hand insights on consumption patterns, waste generation, and potential solutions. The data analysis revealed key trends and helped identify practical measures for minimizing waste and improving food management systems on campus.
The discussions that followed reflected a deep commitment among participants to adopt sustainable practices in their daily routines. Many expressed enthusiasm to join the Sustainable Development Cell and contribute to future initiatives. The campaign served as a platform for collective reflection and action, successfully linking awareness with measurable outcomes. It inspired continued collaborations with campus food joints to implement strategies such as improved portion control, better inventory planning, and food donation drives.
The initiative reinforced Christ University’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management, contributing meaningfully to the global vision of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

The Department of Economics, Christ (Deemed to be University, Central Campus) organized a guest lecture titled “Organic Farming: A Real-Life Experience” on 16 February 2023.
The session was coordinated by Ms. Deepa V. K., Assistant Professor and SDG Cell Coordinator, and featured Dr. Ramya Devi, Founder and Educator, Mounam Nature Learning Centre, Tamil Nadu, as the guest speaker. Drawing from her personal journey, Dr. Ramya Devi shared how she translated her academic learning into a meaningful, sustainable livelihood through organic farming. She narrated her experiences of developing a self-sustaining model that integrates agricultural productivity with environmental preservation and community education. Her talk emphasized the principles of sustainable living, eco-friendly farming practices, and the importance of reconnecting with nature through conscious lifestyle choices.
The session also explored the social and economic challenges associated with organic farming, including issues of marketing, pricing, and consumer awareness. Dr. Ramya explained how she overcame these hurdles by developing creative community-based approaches, training individuals across different age groups, and promoting environmental education through her learning center. The initiative contributed to the global UN Sustainable Development Goals by aligning with objectives that promote sustainable agriculture, responsible consumption, and climate action.
Students gained valuable insights into the practical applications of sustainable development theories and learned how individual commitment can drive environmental and social change. The session fostered a deeper understanding of how organic farming supports ecological balance, ensures food security, and empowers local communities. The primary beneficiaries were undergraduate students from the Department of Economics, who left the session inspired to integrate sustainability into both personal choices and future professional practices.
