The Department of Media Studies held a screening of the documentary film ‘Landless’ on the 25th of January, 2020. The film showcased the issue of caste-based discrimination faced by the people in the Sandoor and Bhatinda districts of Southern Punjab. The filmmaker was present for the discussion. Mr Randeep Madoke, a native of these districts, made the film over the span of 8 years, with no prior technical experience in filmmaking. He continues to shoot and screen his films across India.
A question and answer session post the screening saw students discuss a wide range of topics from the issues portrayed, to the filmmaking process. Mr. Randeep spoke about the relationships he built with the subjects of his film, and how the visuals in his film were intended to speak entirely for those being discriminated against. When asked if he spoke to the people that perpetuate caste discrimination, he said the film ‘Landless’ needed to focus only on the victims of discrimination. The signs of discrimination were evident in the film. We hope that the film will help spread awareness of this evil by providing a voice to those discriminated against.
