Overview

Established in 1969, the Department of Economics is one of the strongest and vibrant departments in the institution. The Department of Economics has distinguished itself to be one of the leading centers of learning Economics in the country. The Department has the distinction of having developed a unique and challenging curriculum and syllabi at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral Research levels. Students and scholars are trained to analyze concrete problems with the help of conceptual frames, theoretical insights and mathematical, statistical, and econometric tools along with computer applications. Various academic programmes offer a comprehensive package with a thrust on both theoretical and practical applications. Along with core courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Developmental Economics, International Economics, Behavioural Economics, Financial Economics, Environmental Economics, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, a wide range of specialized courses including Labour Economics, Public Economics, Health Economics, and Operations Research are well integrated into the curriculum.


The emphasis on experiential learning has made Dissertation, Internship, and training on data analysis an integral part of the curriculum. Through its well-known academic programmes, the Department, with its enviable legacy of illustrious teachers and alumni, has carved a niche for itself as a center of learning where Economics is taught with a difference. It is a matter of great satisfaction that students and faculty act in unison to make the teaching-learning process a highly purposeful mission. Currently, the Department, under the leadership of Dr. Tony Sam George, the Dean and Dr. Joshy K J, the Head, along with eighteen accomplished faculty members offers a wide array of academic Programmes at Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral levels.

Message from the HOD

Warm greetings and a hearty welcome to the Department of Economics at CHRIST (Deemed to be University)

Our mission is two-fold. First, to prepare students to understand and resolve the numerous challenges in the economy through relevant research-based education. Second, to educate our students to become successful professionals and socially responsible citizens. To facilitate this, we have meticulously designed our undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs.

The eclectic mix of courses offered, allows the students to capitalize on their metiers and overcome their weaknesses. In order to ensure a more applied and dynamic curriculum, we place high emphasis on dissertations, internships and data analysis training and motivate students to embrace new academic challenges to hone their critical thinking skills and enhance their competitive advantage in the job market. Some of our alumni are professors in top academic departments around the world, and are making an impact in both Government and corporate entities.
