About the Programme

The Department of Liberal Arts, at CHRIST (Deemed to be) University, Bannerghatta Road Campus is dedicated to offering courses and programs that focus on a broad, interdisciplinary approach to education. This department encompasses a range of subjects focussed around the themes of environment, social justice, peace-building, gender and intersectionality, history and material culture, psychology, media studies, communication, industry and innovation - all of which is aligned with the idea of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Liberal Arts Program also refers to the concept of globalization in all its forms – including political, biological, digital, cultural, economic, and most importantly – historical. With courses designed to equip its undergraduate students with a plethora of skills like critical thinking, research writing, analysis, performing and visual arts and culture, language, communication, creativity, as well as the know-hows of being industry-ready, the Liberal Arts undergraduate program is - one of its kind - in striving to enable its students to be competent and knowledgeable problem-solvers who will be ready to address contemporary issues in today’s world. The aim of the Department is to  nurture well-rounded individuals who are socially responsible, intellectually enriched, effective communicators and above all, are compassionate thinkers with a penchant to build a better world.
We at the department of Liberal Arts, firmly believe that new ideas come from ‘thinking outside the box’ and developing new perspectives that combine diverse ways of knowing the world. With our enabling environment, empowered leadership and governance structure, we are breaking away from the pattern of conventional educational structures and creating a space for student-centric flexible learning systems which  allows students to explore and curate their own visions and aspirations – incorporating creative expressions like music, theater, art and sports into the curriculum as well. Our majors’ program has been designed to offer a selection of stimulating coursework that prioritizes class discussion, featuring dedicated and experienced faculty, and prepares students for an inspiring career.

Within this approach, the Liberal Arts degree allows the students to tailor their own specialisation according to their own unique interests by choosing from amongst seven ‘Discipline Specializations’ as listed below:

1.Psychology

2.English and Cultural Studies

3.Economics

4.International Relations and Public Policy

5.Business and Management

6.Media and Communications

7.Archaeological Sciences and History
The seven discipline specializations allow seven possible trajectories for a student’s career growth after completing the degree including employment opportunities in the fields of research, teaching and learning, policy and practice, development and advocacy, industry and consultancy, arts and creativity. The foundational knowledge acquired in these seven thematic areas forms the basis of a knowledge pool that will enable deeper understanding and engagement without necessarily being bound or limited by one particular discipline in their formative years in the university.
The program is interdisciplinary at its core entailing a wide range of faculty expertise in various disciplines. It encompasses a robust pool of invited industry experts, academic scholars and professors contributing to its teaching and learning atmosphere. A diverse student population, successful alumni, good infrastructural facilities, and a range of meaningful campus events further support the department in its growth trajectory throughout the academic year. Both national and international collaborations contribute towards enriching learning outcomes for liberal arts students preparing them for global outreach and interactions.

Welcome to the Department of Liberal Arts in the heart of Bangalore city! As one of the premier sites of Liberal studies based education, scholarship, professional and civic engagement in the country, we invite you to broaden your understanding of yourself and the world, engage with and work in the community, and learn from innovative faculty and staff.

Deciding a path for oneself, and choosing what and where to study is one of the most crucial moments in one’s life - no matter when one begins their educational journey. Here, at the Department of Liberal Arts, we offer our students the option of choosing and tailoring their own degree from various thematic discipline based majors, minors, and skill based courses from across the social sciences, business studies, humanities, and interdisciplinary themes.

I am confident that, no matter the path you select, you will gain skills that will help you have a successful career and navigate our rapidly changing world - and steer it towards a sustainable future. That is because a Liberal Arts degree goes far beyond learning facts and figures - you will learn to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of the society, fostering a life-long learning experience that nurtures commitment to civil society through an engaged and educated citizenry.
As a student in the Department of Liberal Arts, you will have the opportunity to learn essential life skills including creative and critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. Our classes are led by our faculty - who are scholars, practitioners, and experts in their fields. They are passionate about student learning and take a genuine interest in your success - thereby fostering an environment where you can ask big questions without fear, take different and multiple perspectives without hesitation, and collaborate on solutions to real-world challenges, with ease. As a result, you will develop a deep understanding of the human condition, cultivate empathy, and gain valuable insights into the diverse perspectives and cultures that shape our global society. But at the same time you will also be prepared to adapt to the present world, where computational thinking and digitization along with AI is transforming the economy, the job market, and how humans interact with each other.
At the same time - the Department of Liberal Arts - is also a great place to create lifelong friends, network with potential employers and our alumni, as well as enjoy the many cultural experiences one can have in our inclusive and plural space. We cannot wait for you to join us!
