Programme Overview

About the Programme

Music is an artform which enables expression throughout all areas of the experiences psychology scientifically pursues. The Music and Psychology programme provides an integrated understanding of both disciplines. The programme aims to develop musical, artistic and psychological skills in practical ways to build experience  grounded in scientific backing with familiarity in emerging technologies. Students who have secured 75% marks and above in the first six semesters are eligible to qualify for a 4-year degree (Honours / Honours with Research) in Psychology, or may be eligible to pursue an Honours degree in Music.

Conservatoire-Level Training in an Academic Setting

Students receive individual instrumental or vocal tuition from Semester 1, progressing through six levels of Performance Specialisation (Piano or Voice) before entering their chosen Honours pathway.

Psychology as a Full Second Discipline

Psychology is not a minor or an elective — it is a complete, credit-bearing second major, covering cognitive processes, developmental psychology, psychological disorders, research methods, and applied specialisations.

Internationally Validated Assessment System

Every assessment is mapped to the CAP (Cognitive–Affective–Psychomotor) framework and tracked through an automated attainment calculator, validated through international research.

Direct Pathway to Doctoral Study

The Honours with Research pathway includes a formal dissertation and research methodology training that meets NHEQF Level 8 requirements, providing a direct academic pathway to the department's own PhD (Music) programme.

Choose Your Track

The BA Music / Psychology programme offers three distinct pathways in Year 4, each designed to launch a different career trajectory. All pathways build on the same foundation of six semesters of dual-discipline study.

Music Theatre / Performance (Honours)

For students who want to perform. This pathway culminates in a Capstone Performance and Performance Residency, with intensive training in acting, dance, and singing for the stage. Graduates are prepared for careers as performing artists, ensemble musicians, and music theatre professionals.

Music Research Pedagogy or Ethnomusicology (Honours with Research)

For students who want to investigate. This pathway includes formal Research Methodology training and a supervised Dissertation. Graduates are positioned for postgraduate research, music education leadership, and academic careers.

Psychology Research (Honours with Research)

For students whose primary research interest is in psychology. This pathway includes Advanced Research Methods, Psychodiagnostic Assessments, and a Research Manuscript, preparing graduates for postgraduate clinical, counselling, or organisational psychology programmes.
