About UGRIP
Undergraduate Research Immersion Programme (UGRIP) is an innovative program designed to provide first-year students of School of Science with the unique opportunity to integrate their academic studies with hands-on research. UGRIP allows students to tackle significant problems across various research fields, often resulting in publishable findings.
The programme kicks off with a Research Awareness programme in the first year. Throughout this journey, students acquire a mastery of research techniques, delve deeply into the background knowledge of a specific research question, and actively participate in the early stages of addressing a real-world research problem. This comprehensive experience equips them with practical skills, enhances their understanding of complex scientific concepts, and prepares them for advanced research challenges. By the end of this process, students are well-prepared to tackle more sophisticated research projects and contribute meaningfully to their fields of study.
What makes UGRIP unique?
The School of Science at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) offers the exclusive UGRIP where teams of faculty researchers design and supervise research areas. As a result, students engage with diverse faculty members early in their university journey. New laboratories have been specially designed, and equipped to provide the innovative infrastructure necessary for undergraduates to conduct cutting-edge research in their assigned streams.
The School of Sciences UGRIP uniquely places students directly into a research area of interest from the outset, enabling them to collaborate with faculty starting from their first semester. This extended timeline of six semesters fosters the development of mentor-mentee relationships for a significant number of first-year students, offering a step-by-step progression and structured mentoring. After completing UGRIP, students are well-prepared to continue research in faculty labs and secure summer internships, effectively setting the stage for future careers in the sciences and engineering. UGRIP prioritizes collaborative teamwork skills, aligning closely with UNSDGs as well as what employers seek in university graduates.
How Does UGRIP Function?
Undergraduate Research Immersion Programme students engage in research through specialized courses known as Research Streams. These streams focus on specific fields within the sciences and are guided by Research Experts from the respective departments or across the departments. Each Research Stream benefits from a dedicated laboratory, meticulously designed and equipped to support its unique research activities.
The course sequence for each Research Stream starts with a Research Methodology classes in the third semester. These foundational classes emphasize in identifying and formulating effective research questions, providing students with essential skills and knowledge to embark on their research journeys. The students dive into hands-on laboratory work within their designated Research Stream under the supervision of a teacher.
Students engage in drafting research proposals, drawing upon their training in protocols and equipment usage. They then proceed to execute their proposed research projects. This approach not only hones their interpersonal and communication abilities but also sharpens critical thinking and enhances proficiency in advanced technical skills and lead to scientific publications and patents.
Admission Procedure
To enrol, students must fill online enrolment form with their area of research interest. The Head of the Department along with committee members will be conducting the interview process for final selection. More details are available in the guidelines.
