Christ University, a Deemed to be University, was established as Christ College in 1969. The Institution made steady progress over the years, with the introduction of postgraduate programmes in 1991 and a number of academic collaborations with reputed national and international institutions. The Institution has the rare distinction of being the first institution in Karnataka to be accredited by NAAC in the year 1998. In 2004 the Institution became Autonomous, as recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and it was re-accredited with A+ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation (NAAC) in 2005. UGC further recognised the Institution for its ‘Potential for Excellence’ in 2006, followed by declaration of the Institution as ‘Deemed to be University’ under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the MHRD Notification on 22 July 2008 and by the name ‘Christ University’. The Institution was accredited as a University by NAAC with the highest Grade ‘A’ in 2016.
The University has been promoting local and international languages and cultures since its inception, and currently offers language courses in Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil, German, and French in the regular curriculum. The Kannada Sangha started by the University has published over 240 books in Kannada in various genres.The Centre for Indian and Foreign Languages was established to further the University policy of promoting languages, both Indian and International. The Centre offers courses in the local languages –Hindi, Kannada, and Sanskrit, and the foreign languages - French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. The University collaborates with Alliance Française de Bangalore and Goethe Institute, Max Mueller Bhavan to offer international certification for the DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) courses which correspond to two levels (A1 & A2) in the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The Centre is working on introducing international certification for Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Korean.
