The University has been promoting local and international languages and cultures since its inception, and currently offers language courses in Kannada, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil and French in the regular UG curriculum; and French, German, Spanish and Chinese as generic electives.in certain programs. Basic courses in Hindi, Kannada, Sanskrit, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese are offered as 30 / 45 hour open electives across all disciplines.
The Centre for Indian and Foreign Languages was established to further the University policy of promoting languages. A Beginner course in Hindi is being offered to students of Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) since September 2021.
In collaboration with Alliance Française de Bangalore (French); Insituto Cervantes, New Delhi (Spanish); Goethe Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore (German); and Sakuraa Ningo Resource Centre, Bangalore (Japanese); CIFL offers the following open electives / value added courses leading to international certification corresponding to the first / second level in the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The 110 /120-hour courses are spread over two semesters in two parts viz. A1.1 and A1.2 respectively; A1.1 for 55/60 hours and A1.2, for 55/60 hours. The formative and summative assessments as well the attendance requirements followed for all other University programs apply here too with marks/grades awarded, considered for internal credits in both semesters as per university norms.
