Event: Lecture on CHALLENGES OF INDIAN DEVELOPMENT  
 
The Department of Economics in association with Bengaluru Collective oragnised a guest lecture on the topic “Challenges of Indian Development”. The guest lecture was delivered by Prof. Venkatesh Athreya from Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development. The audience of the program were the post graduate students of MA Applied Economics and BA final year EPS students. The program started with the welcome address given by Dr. Greeshma Manoj, the event coordinator for the program. During his talk, he touched upon recent developments in three different aspects of India - economy, polity and society. He started his talk with a brief overview of the development of India’s economic development since independence. He focused on the developments in the 1980s which formed the basis for future growth and development in the following decades. He touched upon various nuances of the liberalisation. During his talk, he shattered many notions people have especially about the economy. While corporations form a big part of the service sector, self-employed also form a major part. On the foreign exchange front, remittances for a large part of our foreign inflows and help support our various foreign trade activities. He concluded his talk on the economic sphere highlighting the two crisis the Indian economy faces - the agrarian crisis and the jobs crisis.

In the polity segment, he highlighted the businessmen-bureaucrats-politician nexus and dwelt on the nuances of this relationship. While talking about Indian society, he traced how India has evolved since independence highlighting the situation of women, tribals and others. He drew attention to the fact that protests have increased in the past few years. His ending comments were optimistic with focus on the various ways to address these challenges. His talk was followed by a question-answer session. Mr. Deepak Johnson from Bengaluru Collective thanked the dignitary as well as the audience .
