EXCELLENCE AND SERVICE
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the major departments in the university and has been in the forefront, providing quality education and training in the field for the past four decades. Adhering to the vision and mission of the university, the department has been striving to achieve its objectives while providing a holistic learning environment to its students.
Mission of the department is to organize, connect, create and communicate mathematical ideas effectively through 4D’s- Dedication, Determination, Discipline and Direction.
Faculty and students: The department consists of 20 faculty members with 2 Professor Emeritus, 5 Professors, 2 Visiting Professor, 1 Research Mentor, 4 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors and 2 Adjunct Faculty members. Also, there are 2 research assistant, 2 academic support staff and 2 administrative staff members. All the regular faculty members of the Department of Mathematics are with Doctorate degree. Amongst students, there are 54 scholars completed M.Phil and 17 completed PhD. Currently; 29 scholars are pursuing PhD and 4 scholars are pursuing M Phil in the department. At the post graduate level, there are 90 students and at the undergraduate level, there are 1080 students. The department offers undergraduate level courses in 5 combinations namely, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), Physics, Mathematics and Electronics (PME), Computer Science, Mathematics and Electronics (CME), Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics (CMS) and Economics, Mathematics and Statistics (EMS).
Curriculum: The post graduate curriculum is highly research oriented with two focused areas with a project component. The syllabus is in accordance with NET/UGC-CSIR syllabus and the department offers Choice based Certificate courses, Add-on-courses and summer-internship. It emphasizes on self learning through MOOC courses and a paper by research. To hone the mathematical skills of students, there are summer school and Journal club activities. At the undergraduate level, curriculum is based on technology and the focus is on skill enhancement. There are a number of free Open Source Software tools like Scilab, Maxima, and Python which have been introduced at the undergraduate level. In addition, tools like MATLAB, PYTHON, ORIGIN and OCTAVE are being used for data analysis and computation. A periodic review of curriculum is undertaken and a curriculum development cell has been constituted for overseeing the changes in curriculum. Regular feedback from Students, Alumni, Industry and Academic Experts enhances the quality of syllabus and helps in introduction of changes as and when required.
To enhance the quality of the courses offered, 6 choice based certificate courses like Quantitative Techniques for Managers, Foundations of Mathematics and Statistics for data analysis, which are offered in the even semester and courses like Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive examinations, Introduction to Mathematical Packages and First course in Statistics using SPSS, offered in the even semester. At the post graduate level, add-on courses are offered in all semesters. These are Teaching Technology and Research Methodology in Mathematics (First Semester), Introduction to Mathematical Packages (Second Semester), Statistics (Third Semester) and Operations Research (Fourth Semester).
Teaching, Learning and Evaluation: Programs for Faculty development like training programs, orientation programs, refresher courses, quality improvement programs, conferences and workshops are held regularly. New and innovative teaching practices like group discussion, peer learning workshops, project, seminars, presentations, demonstrations using software and study trips are other noteworthy features of the department. e-content has been developed for certain selected courses. Mathematics Labs are being conducted regularly as a part of syllabi. LMS is extensively used for assignments, tests, for providing materials for students etc. There is a regular validation of course plans, work done dairy, feedback from students, alumni and parents. In order to assess students on a continuous basis, which helps in effective assimilation of knowledge as well as reduce burden of last minute studies, there are online tests, assignments, research work, presentations, project exhibition, MOOC courses, seminars etc. These components are considered for internal assessments. For faculty members, there is a 360o appraisal, consisting of students’ feedback, self evaluation, peer evaluation as well as those from HOD and Dean.
Research, Consultancy and Extension: Research in emerging areas such as Graph Theory, Fluid Mechanics, Differential Geometry, Number theory and Operation Research is a significant feature of the department. Added to that, faculty is engaged in collaborative research with eminent scholars from other universities. There have been 4 minor projects of Rs. 60,000 each and one major project of Rs. 8.65 lakhs which have been funded by the University. Faculty has been very active in publishing their research findings in the form of publications, with more than 200 publications at national and international level. All together, there have been 80 presentations from faculty members. 7 National level conferences, 4 International level conference and 8 Collaborative workshops with three Science Academies have been organized by the department. An informal monthly group discussion on discrete mathematics is conducted on the third Sunday of every month by the department. Faculty members are resource persons, empanelled guides and members of various professional bodies.
Infrastructure and Learning Resources: The infrastructure includes 3 Mathematics labs, 1 Research centre, 17 class rooms with ICT facility and 4 faculty rooms. In addition , there are two Libraries –Main library and Knowledge centre which have 8491 mathematics and statistics related books, print and online journals. Students have access to Wi-Fi and photocopying facilities.
Students Support and Progression: Annual fests to showcase talents of students as well as to develop mathematical thinking are conducted every year. These are known as Convergence (UG Students) and Aarohon (PG Students). Students from various colleges from all over the city participate in these fests. Intra-class fest called Sequence (Mathematics) also held and these give an opportunity for students to compete amongst their peers in the campus. Every year on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, Department of mathematics conduct National Mathematics Day. In addition, conferences, both at National and International levels, Collaborative Workshops, Personality Development Programs, and Skill Development Programs are a regular feature. Assistance for taking up MTTS, Mini MTTS and NET/CSIR exams are provided to the students. Internships and Summer School sharpen their skills while Village Exposure Programs, Child Sponsorships and Social Responsibility week in association with CSA help students to understand social responsibility. Regular guest Lectures, Interface with Alumni and subject experts, Projects and Project Exhibition, Field/Study Trips, Service Learning Modules, Teaching Training Programs for Advanced Learners and Remedial Classes for Slow Learners are some significant features. Placements have been very promising for the students.
