Message

from the HOD

In an increasingly material world, it is a rare privilege to read, contemplate, discuss and critique ideas that have shaped the world over centuries. Rooted in a domain that necessitates conversations over Time and Space, people and cultures, crisis and resolution, the department of English and Culture Studies is marked by lively debate and discussion leading to reflection and research.Among the oldest departments in the University and largest, we are constantly evolving, practising a pedagogy that is shaped by lived experiences and social needs.

We also offer courses that support English language competence across the University, using relevant and digital modes as well as conventional methods developing and producing our own content and materials. The department offers programs at the under graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels with courses dedicated to the intersections of Gender, Spatiality, Ecology and Service Learning, exploring newer modes and fields of narratives and the concerns of these developments. We provide extension services and consultancies through our in-house Incubation Cell. The faculty is involved in research and patenting projects and open to collaborations at multiple levels.Apart from academic writing, our faculty is graced by poets, novelists, translators and writers and most of us are connoisseurs of the Arts. We support Art and the Artists through festivals, deliberations and other avenues of creative partnerships. Our students are sojourners with us in this quest for Beauty and Truth… thoughts and ideas being the hope for the betterment of Self and Society, persuaded by Dostoevsky that ‘Beauty will save the world’ … the beauty of the human spirit, the relentless pursuit of truths in the hope eternal of a better world.

Greetings
This is Thomas George (Rev) an ordained priest in the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. I was fortunate to be a student of the MA in English with Communication Studies first batch 2008-2010. The MA programme offered to us a wide variety of disciplines. The international mixture of students from diverse backgrounds made the class a unique

When I came to Christ University in 2010, I had a very vague sense of purpose. I was fascinated with the form of cinema, and that led me to imagine that I should work in the area of media and arts. Apart from that, I had little to no understanding of art and aesthetics be it literary, visual

One of my favourite memories at Christ was when the English Department got our class to put up a production of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Not only was it extremely fun to play Blanche DuBois, but it was also illuminating to find new kinds of writing in what I think is one of the most diverse curricula in

I was committed to Jabberwocky-the annual Literary carnival, hosted by the English Department as part of my Bachelors program between 2011 - 2014. The facilitators always helped us to find the questions within our personal spaces, and expand them to the Universe out there. I was so inspired after reading 'Leaves of Grass' by Walt Whitman, that I

The teachers inducted us into the arcane world of English literature in unique ways. The teachers also had a unique way of reeling in the motley crew of seemingly recalcitrant high school graduates disguised as freshmen. Needless to say, it worked. To be honest I had no great expectations of literature altering my life in any significant
