English and Cultural Studies

The Department of English and Cultural Studies in consonance with its mission statement is committed to promoting an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation, and innovative ideation. The Department inculcates among its students a critical reading of the self, the society, and the imagined with the aim of molding them into responsible and socially sensitive citizens. The Department facilitates their holistic development by building emotional, academic, social, professional, and global competencies. The Department aspires to create a nuanced understanding of canonical and non-canonical literary and cultural texts, their social milieu for an engaged and enduring understanding of life.

Mission

The Department of English and Cultural Studies works towards the advancement of knowledge through creative and critical modes of enquiry that would equip the student to be socially and ethically aware. We enable this awareness through an inclusive and transformative learning ecosystem in which learners can explore nuances of language, literature and culture. By promoting critical thinking, multicultural competence and respect for diverse perspectives, we aim to nurture a community of socially sensitive and empathetic individuals.

Overview

The department promotes an intellectual climate of critical and creative ideation that aims to inculcate among its students a critical reading of the word and the world alike. It has geared its academic engagements towards molding students into responsible and socially sensitive citizens through programs that are designed to facilitate holistic development. The academic programs seek to build academic, social, and professional competencies along with an ethical outlook.
The academic programs offered by the department are aligned with the University’s vision and mission. Offering programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels, the core areas of inquiry range from the domain in language and literature, to those in and around culture. 
Programs currently offered include BA English (Hons), MA (English and Cultural Studies), and Ph.D. (Cultural Studies)

The Department of English and Cultural Studies (BGR Campus) is a vibrant community of faculty and students who strive towards intellectual growth and societal engagement. In keeping with the times, the department offers courses in emergent fields of English and Cultural Studies with focus on the literary, the social and the cultural. The courses offered in the department are an interdisciplinary fusion of history, anthropology, digital humanities, linguistics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and cultural studies.

Our faculty have expertise in various fields that include Translation Studies, English Language instruction, Gender Studies, Screen Studies, Fandom Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Comparative Literature, Disability Studies and Sociolinguistics. This eclectic mix contributes to the intellectual, social and holistic development of the students, enabling their growth as thinkers and practitioners in society. The department also fosters the creative and thinking spirit in students through a set of student managed clubs and forums like the FIlm Club: 24FPS, the Theatre Club: Prathibimb, the Research Club: Tafteesh, the Book Club: Shared Shelf , the Gender Studies Forum, a student run blog Christribute, a monthly literary magazine Litscape and a biannual research magazine Paracosm.

Sheelalipi Sahana

Sheelalipi Sahana is a doctoral candidate in English Literature at The University of Edinburgh. Her research interests lie in gender studies, spatiality and postcolonial spaces. For her thesis, she is working on spatial modernity in the 20th century Muslim women's fiction from India and Pakistan. She is the co-founder of Tasavvur Collective, a consortium of researchers working on Muslim South Asia. She graduated from Christ University in 2015 with a BA Honours degree in English literature.
