Department Insight

Department is growing leaps and bounds in terms of infrastructure, academic and research facilities. The faculty team is a perfect blend of people with industry and research experience. This largely benefits students, on one hand, to involve in faculty research projects and get recognized by publishing research articles at the National and International level and get an opportunity to connect to industries for training, internship, and projects on the other hand. State of the art training facilities is developed in collaboration with reputed industries. The latest versions of Industry demand software programmes like Ansys, Catia, Creo, Solid Works, Matlab, and STAR-CCM+ are available with the department and are taught either as a part of the curriculum or as value-added courses. Special training is imparted in the core areas like Tear Down of vehicles, Industry 4.0, Robotics, 3-D printing, CNC and also in the inter-disciplinary areas like Data Analytics, IoT and e-mobility. Under Industry oriented curriculum, an opportunity is created for eligible students to engage with industries for their projects during their final year. Students are also encouraged to take part in co-curricular and extracurricular activities organized at different levels for their overall development.

Mechanical Engineering department was incepted in the year 2010 and Automobile Engineering started in the year 2014 (in collaboration with ARAI-Pune).

From HoD's Desk

It is a distinct Honor for me to serve as Head for Mechanical and Automobile Engineering Department, recalling a famous quote, “Every river is a tiny droplet in the beginning and every long journey starts with small strides”, the department is growing fast in terms of infrastructural facilities, faculty expertise, competence and research. The strength of the department is its curriculum design, Industry integration and research opportunities for students. Technology is fast changing in the recent past necessitating the inclusion of interdisciplinary courses into mechanical and automobile engineering along with the emphasis on employability, skill, and competency without sacrificing fundamental core knowledge. Catering to this need, many new courses are introduced in the form of non-departmental electives. The teaching pedagogy focus on outcome-based education involving experiential learning through hands-on and self- learning modules. The curriculum also includes courses and modules on professional development, ethics, equity, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Holistic Education is a unique course that envisages skill requirements in the personal, interpersonal and societal arena to instil confidence in students to be global citizens. I take pride in the fact that our qualified, passionate and easily approachable faculty team is comprised of people having rich experience in academics, research, and industry. An interactive and cordial relationship is maintained between the students and staff that enables the students to develop a sound foundation in the stream in a conducive environment. Our faculty always strive to perceive and resolve students’ queries so that the overall personality of the student is groomed in such a manner that they pass out as Industry Ready Professionals.

State of Art

Department of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering has procured
state of art equipment / types of equipment and have a class leading laboratory for hands-on learning.

The laboratory is equipped with advanced automated machines and robots to cater the needs of industrial solutions and defines the problem encountered in motion planning and machining conditions. The research activity includes the analysis and optimization of the end effector/ gripper movement using KUKA robot Parametric optimization of hard machining of Inconel 718 using coated tools. The current research activities include parametric optimization of high speed machining of Inconel steel using CNC Milling machine and CNC turning machine. This laboratory is also equipped with KUKA KR6 R900 robot, a well advanced robot which can be used to grip and manipulate.

BOSCH Automotive workshop constitutes of Wheel balancing system, 3D Wheel Alignment machine, Vehicle fork lift, Tyre Inflator, Engine Electrical Circuit management system, Tyre fitting machine, engine diagnoses, injector test and Cabin Air Conditioning maintenance machine.  The state of the art test facility available in the lab is one of its unique kind and helps students to have better understanding of the vehicles electrical, and wheel and tyre system maintenance.

The Energy Conversion Engineering laboratory is equipped with facilities for regular academic purposes, research and consultancy works. This lab consists all types of engine like single cylinder, multi-cylinder SI & CI engines connected with mechanical, electrical and hydraulic dynamometers. Engines with EGR, turbocharge, with VCR, with facility to run on duel fuel are available. The lab has a sophisticated computerized research engine, exhaust gas analyser, smoke meter and fuel testing facilities

The centre is aimed to impart automation skill to students to develop skills which are required for many manufacturing and processing industries. Main focus of the centre is on skill development on industrial automation through pneumatics, hydraulics, electro pneumatics, electro hydraulics, programmable logic controllers, Fluid Sim (software) and codesys - IEC 61131-3 programming tools. Students have the opportunity to do their internship on industrial automation in republican institute for vocational education, Minsk, Belarus. after successfully completing the courses offered from the centre on industrial automation. The internship is about industry revolution 4.0 which is the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies.

This facility is for the tear down of Daimler trucks starting with a Light Duty Truck (LDT) followed by Medium Duty and Heavy duty Trucks. The training involves dismantling truck parts in sequence starting from cabin & steering system, engine periphery, transmission system, electrical system, suspension and braking system. Each dismantled part of truck will be studied with respect to its design, manufacture, assembly for further improvements and innovations. The training contributes to provide hands-on experience, benchmarking and knowledge sharing in various verticals of vehicle construction and engineering to provide industry ready engineers.

Ecosence Renewable Energy Lab

The facilities caters to the needs of both academic and research. Research scholars can design and test new renewable energy systems in its domains of Solar and Wind energy. The facilities include Solar PV Grid Tied Training System, Solar PV Emulator, Wind Energy Training System, Wind Emulator, Solar Thermal Training System and Solar Concentrator Training System

Research Facility

Department of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering has varied research projects in
trending research domains supported by state of the art reserch facilities.

Research Lab

Advanced Material

Advanced material testing research lab consisting of facilities for cross sectional metallographic specimen preparation, microstructure analysis, material property testing, testing fatigue, hardness and impact, surface Engineering Lab for thermal shock and thermal barrier testing ceramic coated metal specimen and coating facility with Spray Drier.

Alternate Fuels

The 50-litre capacity biodiesel plant is equipped with advanced technology helps to carry out mass production of biodiesel efficiently. A customised multi-fuel engine modified from Kirloskar oil engine, which has the option of varying compression ratio from 6:1 to 10:1 for petrol (rated power 3HP) and 12:1 to 20:1 for diesel (rated power 5HP) helps to test alternative fuels of gasoline and diesel with eddy current dynamometer.

The facility is developed with the vision to provide the avenues with regards to improved charging infrastructure, smart Electric Drive systems, IoT technologies for EVs and Improved Power System Dynamics. R & D Facility is a joint venture of Safran Engineering Services, IEEE and CHRIST (Deemed to be University).

Research Lab

MR Fluid

Magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) is a type of smart material whose rheological properties (e.g. Viscosity) can be rapidly varied by applying a magnetic field. MR fluid is prepared in the laboratory with predetermined composition of key ingredients including silicon oil, additives and Carbonyl Iron Particles. The fluid is then tested on Rheometer and in-house Electrodynamic Shaker for the magnetization, rheological fluid characterization and vibration damping.
